2024329· It is vital to engage with local stakeholders, and contribute positively to local economies and development. Summary The environmental impacts of iron ore mining pose significant challenges that require concerted efforts from industry stakeholders, governments, and civil society to address.
Mining operations require water for their functioning directly and indirectly. Since a long time mining industry has been exploiting water without realizing the adverse impact it is having on the environment and the regional ecosystem. Acid mine drainage has become a major concern associated with mining.
It is evident from the present study that iron ore mining is having an adverse impact on water (surface and ground) quality. Degradation of surface water quality in the mining area is evidenced by significantly higher concentration of iron, magnesium, coliform bacteria and lower dissolved oxygen than in non-mining villages.
The present study focused on assessing the water quality by using water quality index (WQI) of six streams located surrounding iron ore mine of Suakati area of Keonjhar District of Odisha, which includes the physicochemical analysis of fourteen parameters: pH, colour, total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolve oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total hardness (TH), …

The Hamersley Yandi Iron Ore Mine of Hamersley Iron Pty. Ltd. is located in the Pilbara region, Western Australia, approximately 90km north west of the town of Newman. The iron ore has accumulated in a palaeochannel as an enriched Channel Iron Deposit (CID). Mining in other parts of this palaeochannel has been practised since 1991.
202448· Open-cast iron ore mining is vital for the global economy, providing the raw material for steel production. It is cost-effective and allows for the efficient extraction of large ore quantities within shorter timeframes compared to underground mining. However, open-cast mining can have significant environmental impacts. Open-cast iron ore mining is essential for meeting …
The results from the various water quality test conducted revealed that there is a potential of surface and ground water pollution by iron ore mining.
The working mine of iron ore deposit is well knows that how to minimize the damages on environment. The mine owner doing all the management for protecting environment and for the development of the villages i.e. subsidence control, air pollution control, water pollution control, noise control, biological management, top soil management, management of area reclamation …

2008815· Background, aim, and scope In water systems, water quality and geochemical properties of sediments determine the speciation of trace metals, metal transport, and sediment–water exchange, influencing metal availability and its potential effects on biota. Studies from temperate climates have shown that iron-ore mining and tailing wastewaters, besides …
68· Mine drainage is metal-rich water formed from a chemical reaction between water and rocks containing sulfur-bearing minerals. Problems that can be associated with mine drainage include contaminated drinking water, disrupted growth and reproduction of aquatic plants and animals, and the corroding effects of the acid on parts of infrastructures such as bridges.
This is to certify that the thesis entitled “Impact of iron ore mining on water quality” submitted by Sri Abinash Naik (Roll No. 111MN0395) in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Technology degree in Mining Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela is an authentic work carried out by him under my supervision and guidance.
